Happy Cup Match Eve Kids!

Technically, we’ve had a three-day work week, however I expect that most of you have mentally checked-out already (for anyone who did manage to get some work done this week, I take my hat off to you).  Hope you all have a safe and fun holiday and here’s what’s going on in Bermuda for this weekend and beyond:

Cup Match is a time of community spirit (with a little friendly rivalry mixed in) so, in addition to their own Pre-Cup Match Denim Day, Capital G employees will also be supporting the Family Centre Tag Day by volunteering to sell Cup Match ribbons at tagging stations at 1 Church Street, 19 Reid Street and Washington Lane, from 8.30am until 4.30pm. VSB/MIX 106.1 will also be in Capital G from noon until 2pm today for a live radio remote feed. To encourage Cup Match ribbon sales and donations to the Family Centre, Keevil “The Captain” Burgess will be speaking to Capital G CEO Ian Truran, Family Centre reps Martha Dismont with Dr. Sandy DeSilva, and Cup Match cricket team representatives, Lionel Cann and Jekon Edness. To further generate activity at the bank for the Family Centre Tag Day, Capital G has arranged for a Reid Street closure from 12.30pm, with vendors and entertainment to include DJ Aztec, Ashley’s Lemonade, water provided by Dunkley’s, D’Crazy Popcorn, Cleveland County Cold Treats and a final surprise performance to re-open Reid Street at 1.30pm.

Food, Inc. is the next film showing in Bermuda National Library’s Get REEL Wednesday Documentary Film Series. This will be screened this afternoon at 4pm in the meeting room – here’s the flyer!

The Adult Services Film Selection at Bermuda National Library this week is Chocolat with showtimes at 11am and 2pm on Saturday, August 4th. All are welcome but they suggest you get there early since spaces are limited – here’s the flyer!

Even more festivities in the West End this weekend as Sandys Secondary and Sandys Sec. Middle School will be having Grand Reunion on Saturday, August 4th. All former teachers and students over 18 are invited to attend, along with their spouses and significant others. The Reunion will be held in the school’s Amphitheatre and is partially planned to formally thank the hundreds of former students and teachers whose fundraising efforts contributed to the construction of Sandys 360. The evening will begin at 6.30pm with organized tours of the 360 Centre, followed by a formal programme of entertainment by former students, hors d’oeuvres, a fashion show (including old school uniforms), a raffle and then the DJ will have you dancing until late to old and new sounds. Admission costs $20 and funds will go towards Sandys 360’s Youth Development Programmes. Tickets are available from Caesar’s Pharmacy, Sandys 360, People’s Pharmacy and Clara-Bows Boutique – here’s the flyer!

Ming Mambo invite local salseros to their next Social Night at Inferno Lounge, a newly-opened members-only club at 80 North Shore Road, on Thursday, August 9th.  From 9pm until 1am, local DJs will be bringing their salsa, bachata and other Latin music playlists so you can either chill out and soak in the ambiance or strap on your dance shoes and join in. For more details, follow the link here.

Hard to believe that some summer activities are ending already but SpikeFest Beach Tournament is the Bermuda Volleyball Association’s final beach tournament of the year and will be on Horseshoe Bay Beach on Saturday, August 11th (rain date August 12th). This is a same-sex tournament with both a 4-a-side division ($120 per team) and a 2-a-side division team ($60 per team).  The registration fee includes lunch, beverages, DJ’d music and prizes as well as tournament entry. Registration is open until August 8th at www.bermudavolleyball.bm.

Interested in finding out how you can reduce or eliminate your dependence on reading glasses?  Opti-K, a non-invasive eye treatment is now available in Bermuda and, to give you an in-depth understanding of how the procedure works, Dr. Harry Glen from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (a Harvard Medical Teaching Hospital) and Dr. Leonard Teye-Botchway of Bermuda’s Center for Vision Rejuvenation are hosting a free information session on Saturday, August 11th.  This will be from 4pm until 6pm at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.  To register online, visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/event/3998537734here’s the flyer!

Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) will be honouring the memory of Tamell Simons with a new show opening on Friday, August 17th from 5pm until 7pm. One Love: A Tribute to Tamell Simons will be showcasing some of Tamell’s work from the Royal Gazette and will run until September 5th.  BSoA are also calling all photographers to enter their photojournalistic works in the spirit of Tamell’s motto, One Love. The deadline for entries is Wednesday, August 15th at 4pm and the entry form can be downloaded from www.bsoa.bm.

Local band Giant Steps will be featured in concert during Jazz Caravan at the Leopards Club on Sunday, September 9th at 4pm. Tickets are $50 and on sale at The Music Box. The band, consisting of Max Maybury, Eugene “Stacker” Joell, Clarence “Tootsie” Bean, Dennis Fox, Quinton “Tiny” Burges and Graham Maule, are hoping to participate in the December 2013 Havana International Jazz Festival in Cuba.  For more details contact Dale Butler on 505-3409 or Darlene Hartley on 737-7707.

If you see flying discs in the air, don’t be concerned, it is likely to be a game of Ultimate Frisbee in progress.  The schedule and locations vary by season but they are currently playing on Wednesday afternoons from 5.45pm at Dellwood Middle School (near TCD and Bernard Park) and on Sundays from 9am on Elbow Beach. They always welcome new players so contact Dominic.Sanders@Fairmont.com if interested.
